in the mines

Some photos from underground... nasty conditions, wet and cold and slanted. At least there were no bugs.

This first room in the mines was labeled as Solitary Confinement. It had a wild reverberating echo, almost like being inside a drum.

it's aaallliiivvveee!!

Not quite a year since my last post! I've been busy doing lots of stuff at Venan, but the cooler work for our own IP's is still NDA'ed. I'll have to see if any of that stuff might be available to show in the future.

In the meantime, here's a panoramic photomerge from our visit to the Newgate Prison and Coppermine in East Granby CT.

new job!

So I'm wrapping up my 4th week as a salaried Concept/2D artist at Venan Entertainment and I figure that by now it's been long enough that I'm not going to jinx it by posting it here!

Not only am I having a lot of fun, but since it's a relatively small team (I'm just the 3rd person in the art department) I get lots of hands-on nuts & bolts work on the projects at every stage of development.

This is the art test I completed for them, the assignment was to design a concept and sprites for a boss character for their recent EA mobile title, Road Rash. I decided that a scooter-riding snake charmer from Calcutta would be an idea addition to the roster of baddies. The required sprites were two version, 90 and 32 pixels high.

buzz buzz

About a year ago I drew up this juvenile delinquent fly. This past weekend I took the time to start modeling and texturing him. The current state of the 3d version is geared more towards pre-rendered animations that could be GIF'd for use in a 2d mobile game. When I have some more time, I'd liek to make a high-poly version that looks much more like the drawing,

calling trees

A recent sketchbook page... I'm definitely getting more interested in environments/landscapes, probably because my daily commute has me passing through the forests on the Merritt Parkway in CT.

This is a fairly typical morning view for me... sometimes with less cars, lately with many more.

retro-future wizard and barbarians

Today I have a mostly-finished steampunky swashbuckling wizard (which I have encumbered with the ungainly character class of "swashzard."), also for Midnight Studios.

I also just got clearance tonight to post this massive 18-piece dump of character designs I did for Luminous Arts. I did these drawings in a bit of a marathon, all were drawn in about 5 evenings, after getting home from the day job (product designer and all-around pixel jockey at the Danbury Mint) It's pretty safe to assume these guys are barbarians, but the project is unannounced and possibly liable to be taken down if the client disapproves. So gander while the goose is golden! :)

Mages and Witches

Last Fall I did some work for Midnight Studios, early concepts for a computer game based around magical combat. Kevin Normann just gave me the go-ahead to post these online, so here you go!
